The life lesson we didn't want this week

TL;DR - Life-first business strategy, delivered weekly. One strategy you can actually use, a few resources worth your time, and a couple favorites we're loving right now. You in? đź•’ 3-minute read.

Hi Reader,

My girls have worked all summer on one goal: make the 7th grade cheer squad.

Gymnastics on Monday nights. Conditioning 2 to 3 nights a week. All summer.

40 girls tried out. 13 made it.

The life lesson this week? They did not.

And just like that, my high school trauma (we all have some) came flashing back. But also, it was their first experience of being cut.

Should they have made it? Not sure. Probably yes. But being twins makes it complicated.

Did I want to email the coaches, plus a few more people for good measure? Yes.

Did I? No.

Were they devastated? Yes.

Was it a REALLY hard week? Also yes.

Did I question my sanity trying to manage two (not one) hormonal teenage daughters, a new puppy who ate my favorite pants this same week (because of course she did), and kind of running a business? Also yes.

Did we survive the week? Yes.

Here's what got us through:

I gave myself grace. And them. (Lots of emotions.)
We made a pact to not make any big decisions. (They can wait.)
We leaned into routine and gratitude.
I scheduled connection points with my support system.

Then I read a quote that stopped me in my tracks:

In entrepreneurship, your bad days can be the days most people dream about.

Because here's what my bad week actually looked like:

I got to take them to every single practice.
We sat and emotionally ate Dairy Queen after tryouts. (A great decision!)
We watched Little House on the Prairie (the reboot) and snuggled Poppy on the sunniest day.
We practiced gratitude a lot. And we're healing. (7th grade is A LOT already and we haven't even started yet.)

And the business? Still going. But it’s not the focus this season.

Isn't that the whole point?

I thought I was creating a schedule to survive corporate. Really, it was building a way to be a present parent and handle carpool on the weeks that fall apart.

I'll take it. And for that I am grateful.

XO,
Holly

✨Your Weekly Strategy Shift

The Schedule Is the Strategy

Instead of asking "how do I get more done this week?" try asking "what would this week look like if my business had to bend around my life, not the other way around?"

That's the whole test. A business built on systems can absorb a hard week. A business built on you showing up perfectly every day cannot. Build for the bad weeks, because they're coming, and the goal is to be at practice, at the Dairy Queen table, and on the couch for the throwback show when they do.

A few things I'm loving, sharing, and clicking this week:

  • I joined Andee Hart on the She Sells Differently podcast to talk about why social media is the sidecar, not the engine. One of my favorite conversations in a while.
  • Elle Drouin's Evergreen List Growth Summit is free to listen, but the VIP pass gets you lifetime access to all 12 sessions, including mine on landing 50+ leads a month from AI search.
  • About those pants Poppy ate. The replacements are these, and honestly, they're better than the originals.
  • Our family throwback rotation continues with the new Little House on the Prairie on Netflix. The girls are hooked and so am I.

Some of the links I share may be affiliate links, which means I might earn a small commission—at no extra cost to you—if you decide to make a purchase. I only ever recommend tools and resources I truly love and use myself. Think of it as a little thank-you for supporting what we do around here. 🫶

Hi Reader, September is a vibe. I was 46 years old (last year) when I realized this season is called the Ber months. Get it? September, October, November and December. Forty-six. Hands down my favorite time of the year. But it takes a minute to get into it. Because I just spent what feels like 8,987...

Hi Reader, I made a decision this month that I have not said out loud yet. We are not doing a big formal launch this September. No countdown. No cart open, cart closed. No five-day live thing where I show up in a blazer and talk myself hoarse. We are doing something completely different, and it looks...

Hi Reader, The girls started 7th grade on Wednesday. Seventh. Grade. And the bus stop dream I built this entire business around got an upgrade I didn't see coming: Poppy came with us. If you're picturing a calm little puppy trotting along on a leash, no. She is mostly a tiny land shark before 7am....
